چکیده

By J. M. HOUSTON, M.D., B.SC. Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast THIS is a preliminary report describing the storage of blood for transfusion, and comparing the results obtained in the first fifty cases transfused with those of fresh blood transfusions. Blood storage is a definite advance in blood transfusion therapy, the use of such blood having a number of advantages over fresh blood; notably the saving of time, and the fact that the blood may be collected to suit the mutual convenience of the donor and of the doctor responsible for the venesection. Thus its advantage in an emergency, and in war time when many urgent transfusions may be necessary, would be very great. It is also a means of avoiding the waste of blood, as the blood collected from cases where venesection is done as a therapeutic measure need no longer be thrown away, but may be kept until a suitable occasion arises for its use. In addition to the healthy donor and the therapeutic venesection, the source of the blood may be from the placenta or the cadaver. Cadaver blood differs from that from other sources in that it is said not to require the addition of anticoagulant preserving solution. The method has been employed to a considerable extent in Russia, and is still on trial. Most of the blood which I have stored was obtained from therapeutic venesections, and included cases of hypertension, cardiac failure, and polycythaemia. Albuminuria or an increase in the blood urea do not constitute a bar to the use of the blood, and such blood has been used with similar results to the blood from normal donors. Some of the bloods were from healthy subjects, and a few were placental. The number of anticoagulant preserving solutions used is large, but after trying many different solutions I have found the following, composed by mixing one part Solution 1 with three parts Solution 2, before use, to give the best results: Solution 1 Sodium Citrate . . . . . 3.8 g. Bi-distilled Water . . . . 100 c.c. Solution 2 Glucose . . . 5.0 g. Bi-distilled Water . . . . . 100 c.c.

Evaluation of Blood Storage Lesions in Leuko-depleted Red Blood Cell Units

Background: Red blood cells (RBCs) undergo biochemical and morphologic alterations during storage that are known as the storage lesions causing decreased RBC quality and are correlated with transfusion reactions in certain groups especially in infants and critically ill patients. Microvesicles (MVs) as one of storage lesions may be derived from various cell types and have key roles in several...

An Overview on Platelet-derived Microparticles in Platelet Concentrates: blood collection, method preparation and storage

Preparations of platelet concentrates (PCs) that are stored under blood bank conditions and used for transfusion purposes, appear to be enriched in platelet derived-microparticles (PMPs) with high coagulant activity that may change platelet efficacy and safety issues. High shear stress could cause shedding of PMPs from the platelet plasma membrane, platelet aggregation, and activation of the co...

The surface markers and survival rate of platelets during storage at 4°C: The influence of sodium octanoate

Background: Storage of platelet concentrates (PCs) at room temperature (20-24°C) limits its storage time to 5 days due to the destructive effects of platelet storage lesion (PSL) and bacterial contamination. Although prolonged storage of platelets (PLTs) at 4°C reduces the likelihood of bacterial contamination and PSL levels, it is accompanied by an increase in the clearance rate and changes in...

مقایسۀ کارایی فیلترهای پیش ذخیره ای و پس ذخیره ای جداکننده گلبول های سفید در بیماران تالاسمی وابسته به خون

Introduction & Objective: Cellular blood products such as whole blood, packed RBC and platelet concentrate may contain a large number of donor leukocytes. These transfused cells are responsible for several transfusion reactions which include febrile reactions, platelet refractoriness due to alloimmunization and some cell associated virus transmission, especially cytomegalovirus. Advances in b...

Awareness and performance of blood transfusion standards in operating rooms of Shiraz hospitals in 2012

Abstract Background Assuring safety and survival of blood in vitro depends on anti-coagulation substances, blood bag characteristics, storage conditions, and transport of blood. Besides, careful selection and screening of donors as well as blood tests can minimize the transmission risk of blood-transmissible pathogens and optimize blood health. The aim of this study was to assay the level of ...

Frequency of Blood Components Wastage and Associated Factors in Yazd Healthcare Centers

Background: Excessive ordering of blood components imposes heavy costs to blood transfusion centers and increases the amount of blood product wastage due to lack of their use. In recent years, attempts have been made against unnecessary blood and blood product requests in our country. We aimed to investigate the frequency of blood and blood product wasting in healthcare centers of Yazd city in ...
